Systemic

A systemic perspective in psychotherapy refers to the consideration that we as individuals affect and are effected by everything around us. We are part of a larger interconnected whole, a system that includes our family and friends, community, state, nation, humanity, the entire planet, and beyond. In nature and the environmental movement, we refer to “ecosystems” and have begun to understand how human actions affect the various aspects of the planet, which in turn affects man. In therapy, the same principles apply. This is especially significant in family therapy. One member of the family affects each of the other members. They react and affect one another in various ways. Problems build up over time, and the process of healing requires change and adaptation by all.
